How did I get a virus after using Windows Live OneCare Scanner and I have McAfee Security Suite and Firefox is

l had to end up calling Dell Software Tech Support and paying $150.00 for
Bunni
them to remove a virus. This past week l have scanned with Windows One

really important to me. There was one thing that l did: a few days ago, l
noticed my security ''seal'' formail was not in existence (as it had been
for a good while) but l still signed in anyway (l know, do not say it). A
whole bunch of times.1) Why did not my scanning pick something up, 2) how
can this happen when l have Firefox, 3) all l really want is a good way
for me to take care of my computer (l am addicted and on it all the time),
could some kind and knowledgeable person suggest a schedule of tasks l
could do to prevent such things from happening again? l cannot afford such
costly mistakes. l love Firefox and now never use IE. l am sorry this is
long winded. l am so upset and really would appreciate your input. Thanks.

PS- Is McAfee enough for me? Do you like Kaspersky or AVG ?
so
far everyone, many thanks- I am going to obey all these- my downloads seem
to be scanned for viruses already, prior to my opening them because l am
told ''No Viruses Detected''

First off, forget about the One Care Scanning Service from Microsoft
Posts: 266
They are discontinuing it & the end of this month, so don't waste ur

money. It usually does not detect infections. Uninstall it from ur
programs.

As far as comparing Firefox & IE. IE 8 is the most secure, although it
is new & does not work well. Either way there is not to much to worry
about with ur choice of browsers. I would recommend the Newest version of
Firefox because Microsoft is having a lot of problems with IE. It is a
matter of preference no really security in this aspect.

McCaffe is a great program. It should automatically update ur definitions
but do it manually every day to hit update. New viruses come out every day
so you need the most up to date definitions for a good scan result. There
are two scan types: a quick scan & a full scan.

Now depending on the situation you get to choose.

If ur computer is behaving strangely like very slow, programs or files you
did not add are on ur computer, pop ups, changing ur home page or
redirecting without ur permission to different websites then run a full
scan.

Now as far as prevention, I think this is the best way & what I do. When
I download anything. I scan it with MCCAfee first. Right click on ur
desktop, select new, new folder & name it ''Downloads to Scan For
Viruses'' Now whenever you download ANYTHING, save it there. Then right
click the closed folder & hit the MCCaffe logo where it says ''scan''.
This will quickly scan the contents & files in the folder.

Kapersky is excellent & and so is AVG Free, but if you have more than one
virus software programs installed they will conflict & not work so you have
to pick one. Since you paid for McCaffe I would say use that.

As far as hacking ur protection against that is a firewall. Windows comes
with a firewall & so does McCAfee. Go into ur McCaffe settings & check to
see if you firewall is turned on. If it is off turn it on. Of course
there is no guarantee you wont get hacked but this lessens ur
vulnerability. Hopefully that helps. Let me know.

no anti virus program is 100% .. most are just reactive.. ie
Dickens
they find a virus in the ''wild'' they examine it.. then they create a

virus).. so

nothing is as effective as you being carefull & using common sense.

put ur web browser security settings to not run scripts not run java etc..
unless the only sites u open are cnn.com .. .com etc .. big established
commercial sites.. like fortune 500 companys that wont go aroudn giving
people virus.

antivirus are ok for a last defence.. but you should never knowingly put
one to the test.. by risky behaviour on the net..
